Goofy Mouse Selection Issues with Excel 2003

By steve - Posted on 09 February 2009

I had a user ask me how to get out of a goofy Excel 2003 issue: the mouse cursor would move around, but it always acted like the left button was pushed so that it was constantly selecting cells. Other programs were not affected.

Here's what we tried as possible solutions, any one of which may work for you, but it was only the last one that did it for us:

  • Press ESC
  • Press F8 (several times)
  • Press the SCROLL LOCK button (Fn + Numlock on his Dell D620)
  • Clean out the %TEMP% folder for that user:
    1. click Start/Run
    2. enter cmd and press enter
    3. rmdir /s %TEMP%
    4. mkdir %TEMP%
  • Make sure the mouse/touchpad buttons aren't physically getting stuck
  • Remove the mouse driver and re-install it
  • Do a "Print Preview", then cancel the "Print Preview" (this won't work once Excel gets stuck, you have to do it after starting Excel and before you click on a cell)
  • Make sure the latest service packs are installed for Office
  • Kill any Excel programs that are running using task manager
  • Reboot the PC
